CHAPTER THIRTEEN
They arrived back at Nicolaâs flat at midday, having driven through driving rain on the motorway.
âI think I had better ring Nic and put him in the picture, including the fact that I seem to have pinched his girlfriend.â
âWe didnât really have a big thing going but we were good friends and hopefully still will be. I donât think he will be too bothered.â She replied.
They arranged to meet Nic the same day for lunch and went to the Tate again and David first went into the College to get a change of clothes. He was fortunate not to meet anyone who knew him as he had no wish to discuss his affairs with anyone there. They went inside to the coffee shop and David asked Nicola to get the coffees as he wished to speak to Nic alone. She understood and went to the counter.
âThis is very cloak and dagger.â Said Nic.
âNic I donât think you are going to be best pleased with me, but I have to tell you that Nicola and I have been seeing each other.â David waited with trepidation.
Nic laughed. âYou didnât have to be clairvoyant to see this coming. Once I had lost my cool with her the other evening I knew it would be all over for me. Best of luck, mate.â
David was relieved and noticed Nicola was on the way back carrying the coffees, with a look of embarrassment and guilt on her face. Nic looked them both in the eye.
âAllâs fair in love and the other thing. No hard feelings.â Said Nic
Nicola went and kissed him on the cheek. âThanks.â She said.
The matter was closed as far as they were all concerned. David went on to tell Nic what they had found out about some of the victims and thought that he now had enough information to confront Skinner, direct. He was not sure what this would achieve but it was something he needed to do.
âYou are right, David. Letâs put the squeeze on him and threaten him with exposure in the newspapers. That should concentrate his mind a little. Donât forget to mention the words âCompensationâ and âPublic humiliationâ.
âI would love to see him sink and watch his Company go down with him, but I expect thatâs too much to hope for. These companies take a lot of sinking and a couple of million in compensation is a drop in the ocean. Iâm sure his competitors will relish this prospect if and when they find out. Right, Iâll ring his office in the morning and attempt to set up a meeting.â
They finished their lunch and Nic returned to his newspaper office, leaving David and Nicola to chat pleasantly to each other for a while. David decided that he needed time to try and sort out his future, so decided to return to the College library and looked in the medical journals for possible employment. As it happened there was no shortage of jobs, but nothing that took Davidâs fancy.
